How's Beki in Juan's Country?

Being queer in the Philippines is not a new phenomenon — it has long been a part of our history, from the revered babaylans of the pre-colonial era to the vibrant LGBTQIA+ community of today. Queer Filipinos have always found ways to express their identity and sexuality, even within a society shaped by colonialism and conservatism.

However, in a country where laws like the SOGIESC Equality Bill and same-sex marriage are still not passed, it becomes clear that the LGBTQIA+ community is often merely tolerated, not truly accepted.

In the ongoing battle for equality and recognition, cinema has emerged as a powerful platform for queer voices. Through film, Filipino LGBTQIA+ stories have found a space to be seen, heard, and felt — capturing both the struggles and joys of queer life. From the coming-of-age journey of Maximo Oliveros to the powerful motherhood of Trisha Echavaria,

here are some must-watch queer Filipino films that offer a deeper understanding of the community through a rainbow-colored lens:

This critically acclaimed film tells the story of Maxi, a young gay boy growing up in a tough, machismo-filled Manila neighborhood. When he suddenly forms a connection with the new policeman in town, Maxi finds himself torn between love and family. The film presents an honest and tender portrayal of queer identity, young love, and the complex realities that come with growing up queer in a traditional Filipino setting.

A pioneering film in lesbian representation, this classic starred two of the country's greatest actresses, Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor. It follows a lawyer who takes on a dancer's murder case and unexpectedly finds herself questioning her sexuality. Considered bold and ahead of its time, the film also weaves in themes of Sexism, showing how women's and queer struggles often intersect under patriarchal standards.

This internationally recognized film tells the story of Olivia, a Filipina trans woman working as a caregiver in the U.S. while seeking a path to legal residency. Directed, Written, and Starred by Isabel Sandoval — a trailblazing trans filmmaker — Lingua Franca is a powerful narrative on the struggle of immigration as an overseas Filipino worker and a portrait of trans womanhood that resists stereotypes. This film was truly produced by the “Trans Excellence".

A heartwarming Girls' Love film set in 90's high school, Billie and Emma follow two teenage girls who form a deep bond in an environment that tells them their love is wrong. With soft cinematography and relatable themes of identity and young love, this film is a breath of fresh air in queer representation — light-hearted but emotionally impactful. Anyone with the common experience of being a Catholic schoolgirl who explores identity and sexuality can relate to this story!

This internationally-acclaimed and award-winning film stars Paolo Ballesteros as Trisha Echevarria, a transgender beauty queen and loving parent whose life is celebrated through spectacular funeral transformations. Die Beautiful beautifully captures the resilience, humor, and complexity of Filipino queer life, especially for trans women navigating love, loss, and legacy. With its numerous recognition, it found its way as one of the most iconic queer films in this modern day.

The rainbow lens of Philippine cinema reveals more than just characters — it shows lives, loves, and legacies. These films are more than entertainment; they are love letters to voices that have long been silenced. While the fight for legal recognition continues, these stories assert that queer Filipinos are here, have always been here, and deserve to be seen.
